Ooka Sushi

Category : Bucks County, Doylestown, Japanese, Pennsylvania, Restaurant Reviews, Sake

I remember when I first started eating sushi. I quickly ascended into a culinary obsession for the Japanese fast food.  Fortunately, living in the flourishing suburbs of Philadelphia allowed me to indulge whenever I wanted to as there was an amazing tiny Japanese restaurant close to my home in Doylestown, Pennsylvania called “Ooka”. The restaurant was so small it couldn’t have sat more than 15 people, while the rest of the space housed a huge fish tank with some beautiful gold fish and a couple of exotic koi . Truly a hidden gem.

That was Ooka Sushi at least ten years ago. A couple years ago, it went through a major overhaul and has doubled in size. In addition to the extra space it’s received an incredible contemporary look, complete with glowing bar and multiple hibachi tables. Ooka brings you a sense of the elite interior decor of a high end Miami nightclub in sleepytown suburbia, a refreshing change of pace.  In addition to the ambience, Ooka offers a diversified menu of sushi rolls to choose from as well as the typical faves. One of my absolute adorations is the “New York Roll”, fresh Salmon, with Fuji Apple. To die for. Ooka, also has a nice collection of Sake’s to compliment any taste.

Ooka is great for impressing a date or just a casual business meeting, but call ahead to make sure it isn’t crazy busy. Ooka, has built up quite a reputation over the last few years, and has couple locations to boast their status. In 2010, Philadelphia Magazine named Ooka “Best of Philly 2010” for “Best Sushi”. Not to pat my own back, but I was saying that 8 years ago…. If you’re a foodie and like to try new places, Ooka Doylestown is perfect. Located in a bustling little town with lots to do, give it a try, you won’t be sorry.

The Pita Pit

Category : Pennsylvania, Restaurant Reviews, Saucon Valley, The Lehigh Valley, Whitehall

On a whim my wife and I stopped at the Lehigh Valley mall to walk around the other day. We went around noon and decided we were hungry so we looked for some food. Instead of the same old fired or fast food we found “The Pita Pit”. We stopped in and found a pretty diverse menu including some vegetarian entrees.

The Pita Pit explains that they were “founded on the idea that people want an exciting alternative to fast food restaurants—a place with great tasting food that’s healthy, fresh, and still served fast.” Continue Reading

Hotel Helix- A Kimpton Hotel & Lounge

To say that the pop-art infused boutique Hotel Helix is probably thefunkiest,  most fun hotel in Washington D.C.  would be a HUGE understatement! Hotel Helix- A Kimpton Hotel is just one of Kimpton’s Hip treasures in the form of a place to stay! The reason we decided to feature Hotel Helix was simple.  We stayed here almost a decade ago when we were doing on the road reporting with the rock band, FUEL and knew that if a famous band picked this hotel to stay at then it was definitely a place we wanted to go back to. In fact, on our recent visit, we were told that hometown celebs, Thievery Corporation stay at Hotel Helix when they have concerts to perform!   In a recent article, we read that Hotel Helix is more California than Congressional and that statement is dead on! If you want to feel like and party like a rock-star, Hotel Helix is for you! After all…celebs stay there!

White House Sub Shop

Category : Jersey Shore, New Jersey, Restaurant Reviews

You will find excellent subs in and around Philadelphia as well as in other locations throughout the Northeast, but once you’ve experienced The White House Sub Shop, you will NEVER eat a better sub or cheesesteak anywhere!
Each sandwich is about two feet long, loaded with ingredients that range from  white tuna fish, to steak meat, fresh vegetables, to meatballs and sauce. The “White House Special” is a variety of cold cuts — Genoa salami, ham, capicola, and provolone cheese — all tightly packed inside the loaf, lubricated with olive oil, decorated with lettuce and sweet pepper.

The ingredients are excellent, but submarine connoisseurs know that it’s what’s outside that counts. White House bread, obtained from Formica Brother’s Bakery across the street is to die for! You can even venture across the street to the bakery and buy some to take home to family and friends!

Like the cheese steak shops of Philadelphia, the White House likes to boast of A-List Celebs who have visited.  Pictures of celebrity customers line the walls, inscribed with praise for the excellence of the cuisine. News clippings tell of the time the astronauts came to eat, and of Frank Sinatra once having a bunch of them shipped from New Jersey to a movie location.

By no means is this a fancy place to eat. It is what it is. A place you go to get the best sub around! Plain and simple! If you want to sit and take your time, White House is not for you!

Bayleaf

YAY! Allentown Restaurant week is upon us! It’s like a foodlovers Christmas and birthday all wrapped up into one delicious week. This week was a hard choice to pick where we would eat. All the different restaurants sounded so good! We picked a place neither my wife nor myself had ever heard of, looked up the reviews on line, checked the menu for the week and headed out.

Downtown Allentown is trying with all its might to clean up and bring people out. I think without the influx of new restaurants it wouldn’t be anywhere near what it is today. It turns out that Bay Leaf has been in the same area for a very long time. We got here at about 6:30pm and found a parking space right in front. The meters are free after 6 so we didn’t have to fool around with change and headed right in.  Bay Leaf touts itself as New American food with a Thai influence. The décor gives you exactly that feeling too. Very contemporary with a definite Asian touch. We had a choice of seat and decided on a seat next to the front window. If there’s one thing I like as much as food and drink it’s people watching. Continue Reading

Thai Thai II

Category : Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Restaurant Reviews, The Lehigh Valley

Recently, I asked a bunch of friends where they had their best meal ever and I was overwhelmed told to try a couple Thai food places in the Lehigh Valley. I picked Thai Thai II for my first Thai food experience. I went with my wife and a couple friends; I’ve found that good food is better with good friends. We arrived at about 6pm on a Sunday and found very close parking right on the street across from the restaurant.  The restaurant has a very small entrance with a small sign out front so don’t miss it when you go. It was busy but we were seated in just a few minutes. We were seated in a nice back room and quickly waited on by one of the many waiters running from table to table. The menu is filled with tasty sounding appetizers and meals. They also have a large selection of vegetarian meals. Continue Reading
